Subject: TCS,Mumbai ( 10,11 sept 2005) paper & interview questions TCS walkin, Mumbai

Date: 10 & 11 sept 2005
Venue: Thakur College, Kandivali

Hi friends,
I am Abhay Bhattad. I attended the TCS, Mumbai drive & sending u the full pattern of questions & the whole experience. Hope it will be useful for all. Best wishes.
Appeared: 9000-9500 (approx)
Short listed after apti on 10th sept: 515 (Including the one’s whose interviews r "to be scheduled")
Short listed after technical: around 150 (Doesn’t include the one’s whose interviews r "to be scheduled")

Short listed after HR/Managerial: 101

The"Appeared" fig is approx. One of my friends got the form at around 8.30 am on 10th sept. & his form no. was series D-660. Considering at least 4 more series with a thousand candidates in each as the process was on up till the noon, the appeared candidates were approx around the figure I mentioned. At last the mg mt had to close the main gate after 2 pm as a big crowd was still waiting outside.

The crowd had started pouring in from around 4 am in the morning, not caring even for the torrential rains in Mumbai. I myself reached the venue in Kandivali at around 5 am wading my way thru Knee deep water on the road & drenched in heavy rains. The process started at around 7 AM with the distribution of forms and after all the formalities, we were taken for the ap ti. The TCS volunteers were friendly & efficient & there was no chaos at all despite there being such a large crowd.

Apti pattern:
There were 5 series of papers : v,w,x,y,z. The paper had the usual 3 sections:

1. Verbal :
10 antonyms,10 synonyms, passage, fill in the blank with sentences. The synonyms were really tough (& were not a repeat of earlier ones except 1/2) & so was the fill in the sentences passage. The passage was on a vague topic. It took lots of my time but finally I solved it.
Tip to everyone: Plz prepare this section the most & allot it a bit more time too. It is even harder than the CAT verbal section actually. Go thru Barrons 13th repeatedly.

2. Quanti & Logical :
This was easier. Around 50% questions were repeated. There were the problems of the latitude & longitude, temperature, probability, highest std deviation amongst the given, etc.
Some questions which I remember:
1. If a student scores GPA in his semester & year as given below then calculate his GPA for 3 year:
Sem: 2.4,3.14….
Year: 1.3,1.9……
(the figures r not exact.)
2.Match the following: Cow 1. a type of
Mammal 2. a superset of
2 more cases given
3. In a mixture, R is 2 parts and S is 1 part. In order to make S to 25% of the mixture, how much of R is to be added?
Ans.One part of R
4. With a 4/5 full tank a vehicle can travel 12 miles, how far can it travel with a 1/3 full tank Ans. 5 miles
5. A moves 3 kms east from his starting point . He then travels 5 kms north. From that point he moves 8 kms to the east. How far is A from his starting point? Ans. 13 kms
6. 3 angles or 3 sides r given.Which will form a triangle?
7. units of basic quantities :
(energy * time * time )/(mass * dist) = distance
8."$" is for doubling the value "%" is for change of sign then what is the value
$%5-%%$3+$6…….A long expression similar to this one.
9. R-rounding off, M-modulus, T-truncate M(893,10)+r( )+t( ) is asked
10.vertices edges and surfaces of a cube Ans-8,12,6
11.Questions on General computer awareness
Pick the odd one…..
1.http 2.arp 3.snmp 4.baan Ans-baan
1.linux 2.windows NT 3.sql server 4.Unix Ans-Sql server
( 2 more)
12.how many Y’s r followed by F and not preceded by Z
13. largest prime no. in 8 bit computer. Ans: 251
14.e power x curves : note that the values were changed.
15. Coding decoding of words like if something is coded as this then how will u code this(like that)
16. In the word organizational, if the first and second ,
third and forth ,forth and fifth, fifth and sixth
words are interchanged up to the last letter, what
would be the tenth letter from right?
17. In a two-dimensional array, X(9,7), with each
element occupying 4 bytes of memory, with the address
of the first element X(1,1) is 3000, find the address
of X(8,5).
18. A FILE IS TRANSFERRED FROM A PLACE TO ADESTINATION CAPABLE OF 10 KB. THEY GIVEN SOME RATE OF TRANSFER. U HAVE FIND A EQUATION THAT BEST SUIT THIS- there were a lotsa twists given in this question unlike in the previous question papers.
Tip: Keep Ur cool.
19. G (0) =1 G (1)= -1 IF G (N)=G (N-1) + G(N-2) THEN WHAT IS THE VALUE OF G (6)?
20. WHICH ONE WILL BE THE EXACT POWER OF 2? Ans: 2048
21 .A power unit is there by the bank of the river 750 mts. A cable is made from power unit to power a plant opposite to that of the river at 1500mts. The cost of the cable below water is Rs. 15/- per meter ansd cost of cable on the bank is Rs. 12/- per meter. Then where they will cut ?
22. There were 2 series as well.
23. A Venn diagram & questions on it were asked in %. Some students just went for simple figures given but actually we have to take out % of it in almost all questions. SO read the quests carefully.

Critical Reasoning:
The passages were written repeatedly before asking each question. I think that was a trap to waste some time of the examinees before they realize the actual thing.
A) One syllogisms kinda passage:
All reds r greens
All blues r white
No yellow is a white.
Some blues r reds
Etc.
& then questions were asked like: which of the following is true: a red can be a blue but not yellow. And like that
B) The red & brown marriage passage:
There are 2 groups named Brown and red. They can’t marry in the same group. If the husband or wife dies then the person will convert to their own group. If a person is married then the husband will have to change his group to his wife’s group. The child will own the mothers group.
From these a set of 4 questions were given like:
1.If the person doesn’t change his group even after he is a widower or divorcee then which of the following is necessarily true? Some sentences for checking here.
2.Brown’s daughter is red (False)
3. If a person is red. Then his/her mother’s brother belong to which group if he is married
There was no psychometric.
After the apti they declared the results for all the batches together after around 4 hours. They put the students in 3 parts according to their apti scores. The group of students with higher apti scores were called for technical on the next day itself, while the ones with lower scores were told that their schedules for interviews will be declared afterwards (the "to be scheduled candidates").The people with still lower scores were told to check www.recruitment.tcs.com so that if requirements exist they will be called in further batches.
About Technical interview:
My technical was scheduled on the next day (11 September) at 9 am. But I had to wait until around 4.30 pm when I was called in for it… My panel consisted of two people. They were very friendly & cheerful & made me comfortable. Questions were:
1. So abhay, tell us something about urself excluding the things mentioned in the CV ( I spoke at length about myself)
2. Which r Ur fav subjects?
I: told 2/3 subjects. But they wanted more. They don’t consider c & c++ as different subs. So u have to tell 3 more subjects besides c, c++ & OOP (everyone of us loves these 3, right? But they too know it very well….. & hence do prepare more subs)
3. then there were some drilling questions on OS,DS,SE etc
4. demand paging,mem allocation
5. virtual mem
6. virtual functions
7. various sorting methods
8. explain bubble sort. (gave me an array to sort) .What is it’s efficiency
9. "O(n)" notation
10. explain bucket sort
11. Proxmap
12. polymorphism
13. software lifecycle
14. some questions on TOC
15. Some more questions on OS which I can’t remember now.
16. Explain Ur project. (He also suggested me some improvements I could have done in my project. Since my project was about language translation, he asked me about NLP (natural Lang processing), Artificial Intelligence, Google’s foray into NLP research etc. I think he was strong in that area. But I managed to give him pretty satisfactory answers.)
The technical lasted for around 35 mins. Then I was told to wait outside. After 2 minutes a volunteer came & informed me that I was short listed for the HR & was taken to a room for waiting. My turn for the HR round came at around 8 pm.

About HR/MR round:
It was a combined HR/MR round & was the toughest ….. (Surprised? So was I… We generally tend to take the HR/MR round less seriously, but beware friends…It’s not any rule that they wont ask u technical questions here.)
There was a panel of 3 members for taking my HR. They were very knowledgeable and friendly- but u r subjected to lots of pressure during the whole interview. So be prepared to handle REAL pressure. U can be subjected to pressure thru small gestures & even a nod of head can make u pretty nervous at such times…….When I say REAL PRESSURE, I mean it…….

Questions were:
1. How was Ur day today (I said: a bit tough.)
2. Why tough? ( I said: I had to wait since morning….oops,I realized I shouldn’t have told this)
3. So u don’t like waiting? (No sir, it’s not like that…… I did the cover up in an honest manner.)
4. meaning of ur name: Abhay
5. So Abhay, Ur hairstyle is inspired by which actor? ( since I have got long hair) This quest was really a bouncer & at this point of time, in my mind, I had bid adieu to my chances…..obviously cursing my long locks
6. So when r u cutting ur hair short? (I: at the earliest possible date…)
7. What is keeping u busy these days? ( Preparations etc)
8. Why TCS?
9. Have u applied to any companies earlier?
10. Apart from tcs, which companies will u like to work for?
11. Then they started asking technical quests. A completely grueling session of questions on OS, memory allocation, runtime changes in the source code, SE, s/w process mgmt, dirty page, thrashing, address translation etc
(My tip to everyone: Friends, Be thoroughly prepared. It’s not easy at all. But most importantly "be EXTREMELY confident", composed & have a smiling face almost always.)
12. R u ready to sign a service agreement for 2 years? Do u think it’s not OK for a company to get the service agreements signed considering the globalization etc etc...
13. What if we send u for a posting at Assam? Will u be prepared to go to some remote place?
The HR round lasted for around 25-30 minutes. & I have successfully made it to TCS
Hope this is useful to all the TCS aspirants.
Best wishes & get cracking…….

hi friends
i am also attaching some more questions in a file below.
KEAN INDIA LTD., Hyd, would be calling freshers for every 4 monthsor so. Hence the model of the paper
I am sending would be useful to those who want to appear for it in future.
KEAN INDIA LTD., WRITTEN TEST PAPER HELD ON 3-01-2004 AT KEAN SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE,
GACHIBOWLI, HYDERABAD.

Qualifying mark: 50% marks in each section. (sometimes it is 60%)
Paper consists of 3 sections. No separate timing for each section. You can divide it as and how u wish.

section 1: Mathematical Ability & Aptitude---------30 marks
section 2: Verbal and Comprehension-----------------25 marks
section 3: Computer Basics & Logical reasoning---20 marks

SECTION 1: Mathematical Ability & Aptitude-----30 marks

Arrange the sentences--------5 questions, 5 marks, each question is as follows.........
eg:
P: Alas! she had only 30 rupees with her.
Q: Bindu got late for the exam and she started in a hurry.
R: She called an auto and he demanded 50 rupees..
S: She blamed her hurry, as in hurry, she forgot to bring more money.

S: Some boys are not girls.
T:All girls are boys.
U:All boys are girls.
The following sentences are logically related:
a) UTQ b) PQS c) TSP d) RPS e) QSP
Answer : b
There will be 4, 5 sets of question papers. So, each one will get a different question paper.
The model of the paper itself seems tough(for me, atleast) and one would end up with no time.
Hence, to get through this paper, TIME MANAGEMENT is the crucial factor. One needs to keep
oneself cool too, while answering the paper.

Subject: I-flex paper

Hi friends,
I'd appeared for the i-flex exam 2 weeks back and now waiting for my interview results...
The paper had four sections... Each section was given 20 min.s and English section was given 25 mins.

Section-1: Quants...
This section was quite easy and had 15 questions. Questions were based on averages, numbers, i dont remember the questions exactly but were easy please dont go for guessing as there is 0.25 negative marking also...

Section-2: Data interpretation
There were 10 questions based on 2 graphs. These two are also easy and please go thru Barrons, you may not be getting the same questions, but you will be exposed to those kind of questions.

Section-3: Logical reasoning
There were 15 questions, like finding out relations from given set of statements. This section is some what tough but you can do it...

Section-4: English
There were 20 questions and the time for this section is 25 mins. Questions based on synonyms, reading comprehension, putting sentences in an order...
After completing one section you can not go back to previous section, they will be declaring the result there itself...
Our technical & HR interviews were scheduled after 2 days... In technical interview they will be concentrating on your core subjects, my interview was on DBMS, S/w Engineering, C, Be prepared with your project. The interview was cool, after that the HR was after 30 mins. In the HR she asked the same textbook questions like tell me about yourself, Something about iflex, Why iflex, blah-blah...
They told us they will inform in a day or two... but its already a week, but no message from them... If anybody attended for iflex interviews on 14th sep or later please mail me @ anilkreddyr@yahoo.com , anilkreddyr@gmail.com if you get some info about results... Ok then bye guys... All the best...!

There were two persons and one person started writing the subjects
as I told to them.
Questions asked on

wait outside. After 2 minutes a volunteer came & informed me that I
was short listed for the HR & was taken to a room for waiting. My
turn for the HR round came at around 9:30 pm.
About HR/MR round:
It was a combined HR/MR round & was the toughest ….. (Surprised? So
was I… We generally tend to take the HR/MR round less seriously, but
beware friends…It's not any rule that they wont ask u technical
questions here.)
There was a panel of 2 members for taking my HR. They were very
knowledgeable and friendly- but u r subjected to lots of pressure

remote place?
The HR round lasted for around 25-30 minutes. & I have successfully
made it to TCS
Hope this is useful to all the TCS aspirants.
Best wishes & get cracking…….

11 th sep 2005 infosys meenakshi collegechennai

Hi,
I attended Infosys written test on 11th Sep 2005 at Meenakshi College at Chennai.
I cleared the written test and the Interview was on the next day at sholinganallur Chennai. There were 4 to 7 panels (not sure about it). Each panel has 2 members and some have one member only. Interview was 0% technical.

1. A person is 80 years old in 490 and only 70 years old in 500 in which year is he born?

2. I spent one-sixth of my age as a boy and one-12th in youth, remarked the boss "spent one-seventh and five years in matrimony". My son born just after that period was elected as a governor 4 years back when he was half of my present age. What is the age of the boss?

3. A person travels in a car with uniform speed. He observes the milestone, which has 2 digits. After one hour he observes another milestone with same digits reversed. After another hour he observes another milestone with same 2 digits separated by 0. Find the speed of the car?

4. 'A' says if seventy five chickens are sold from what we have now the feed will last for extra 20 days but 'B' says if we buy additional 100 chickens then feed will get over 15 days earlier. Find the no. of chickens both are having now?

5. Trains leave from New York to Washington every hour on the hour (1:00, 2:00....).Trains leave from Washington to New York every hour on the hour and half hour (1:00, 1:30, 2:0, 2:30....).It takes a train 5 hrs to complete its journey from Washington to New York as well as from New York to Washington. A train leaves from New York to Washington. Find out how many trains it will meet before it reaches Washington.

I remember only till this question only.

9. One question similar to 11th question on “Puzzles to puzzle u” but not that much easier question (related to that) (4 line question).

There were 3 logical question of 8, 8, 6 marks. And one more 3 marks aptitude question.

7. Captain is making a race between some friends (5 members) and some 6 condition were given asked to find out their positions in the race. (6 mark)

8th and 6th can’t remember.

10.11 to 14 sentences were given about that and 4 person names and 4 things as hat, tie, and scarf and asked who is wearing what. (Most difficult one)(8 mark)

Interview Experience:

U r looking different from the photo and real (as I was wearing glass on the time of interview and not in the photo)

What is your father?

What is your role in your project?

What is Patrol leader in school? (B’coz I specified in the achievements about that)

Give a situation were u can work as a team and alone?

And then they gave two puzzles but I can’t solve it at that time. But I can solve it after I came out from the room. They were.
1. There are two vessels of same size with water in it and one is 20 degree Celsius and other is 20 degree Fahrenheit. When a coin is put in both vessel which will reach bottom first.
Ans: as 20 degree Fahrenheit is definitely a freezing pt, at this time none can be be immersed so at 20 degree Celsius the coin will immerse first.

2. A Doctor and Nurse gave birth to a child. The child becomes 15 years of age then one day teacher asked the child about their parents and she said that his father is not a doctor and his mother was not a nurse. How is it possible?
Ans: The doctor and Nurse processed the delivery of child and not they are the father and Mother of the child.

And finally they asked any questions from your side??

Then they said the results will be after 4 to 6 weeks.

Regards,

(On written test the selection is based on 10th 12th, graduation aggregate and also puzzles and English. Puzzles clearing cut off is based on your 10th ,12th and BE Aggregate, so if u have more marks in all these then your cutoff will be less. This info is Up to my knowledge but not sure)

Subject: (PAPER) Sep -11- my infosys Interview

HI friends

This is Elavarasan, I thank u all for
Ur help. When I got the call letter I had no hope of
doing it, but the valuable information that u all gave
made me to clear Infosys Aptitude test, but…I didn’t
do the Interview well, sorry not even fine! All bcoze
of my carelessness. In this mail I am giving u the way
how I prepared for the written test and along with
that my Interview questions. I hope u all would have
got enough "aptitude test" question papers so I am
leaving that.

Preparation
I got the hall ticket on 31st August
2005. A week before that I went through about 100
puzzles in Shakuntala Devi’s "Puzzle to puzzle you". I
found that very boring and took many days to go
through. As soon as I got the hall ticket I send a
mail requesting for help to all my mailing groups. I
received lot of help from the groups. I seriously
prepared for the exam for about 4 days. In that 4 days
I finished two books of Shakuntala devi ( "puzzles to
puzzle you" and "more puzzles" ). Then I took George
Summers’ puzzle book. It was very tough and I lost my
hope and concentration. I spent 2 days in George
Summers, but I was able to go through only 17 problems
in that. Then I had four days left. I started to
prepare previous year question papers. I first started
with the latest one i.e., 2005 papers, then I worked
out 2004 question papers. I noticed many question were
repeating and gave an extra attention to the repeating
questions. I also went through R.S.Agarwal for
problems on age, time and work, time and distance and
clock. This is all I did.

The Exam
My exam venue was at Meenakshi
College, Chennai. When the question paper was given I
found most of the questions were from previous test
papers. I was able to answer many questions without
solving them (but I neatly presented the steps in the
paper), because I solved those questions many time
while I was preparing for the test. But even then it
was highly impossible for me to answer the entire
question set in time. I left 3 questions. The English
section was very easy and I completed that very
quickly.

The result
I didn’t have any hope of getting
selected. But to my surprise I found my name in the
notice board and time for the Interview was printed
next to that as 2:00 P.M. As it was very crowded, I
just saw my name and the time, but didn’t see the
Venue!!!!!

Interview
For interview, I just went through my
project. The next day I dressed well and went to
Meenakshi College exactly at 2.00 P.M for attending
Interview. Only after going there I came to know that
the venue was at Infosys campus which is about 30 K.M
from the college. I felt "Oh my God, I made a very
big mistake!" and immediately phoned Infosys but both
the phone numbers were busy! Without knowing what to
do I dove to Infosys campus (In the heavy traffic of
Chennai city). After clearing the security I went to
the interview block. I was 1hr late for the interview.
I met the coordinator for 2 o clock batch and
apologized him for my mistake. He was very kind and
spoke to me calmly. Then came a senior officer (He
must be a senior HRD manager), He was very angry on me
and he didn’t seemed to be convincing. I was already
scared about the interview, added with that his
tension made me feel very bad. I was immediately
called for the interview (I didn’t even have a second
to wash my dusty face or comb my hair!!).
In the interview panel there were two
ladies. Here I use L1, L2, and ME, for the
interviewers and me.
And… here is my interview.
ME-- Good Evening mam.

L1 and L2-- Good Evening.
ME-- I am extremely sorry for being late. I should
have been here by 2 o clock but I taught the venue was
at Meenakshi College and I went there, only after
going there I came to know that the venue is here,
that is why I am late mam.
L2-- Didn’t you see ur venue yesterday?
ME-- Mam there was heavy rush at Meenakshi College
yesterday, so once I saw my name and my interview time
I left.
L1-- didn’t u consult with any others?
ME-- no mam.
ME—just now I came here so may I have some water mam?
L1—sure have some and make comfort.
ME—Thank you mam
L1—So, Ela..va…rasan Ariv….ala…gan, is this the way
others call u?
ME –Yes mam, but few of my friends call me as
"Prince".
L1 – Prince! Why?
ME – because... (L2 interrupted and said to L1 that
the word "Elavarasan" in Tamil means Prince)
L2 – Ok Elavarasan, tell us about you.
ME – I started with my home town, then about my
family, then about my education about my hobbies and
finally the prizes won in competitions.
L2 – What do u think as ur greatest strength
Elavarasan?
ME – I think, my greatest strength is my commitment to
work. If I am committed to do something I make sure
that it has completed. (After a pause) I don’t care
about the amount of work I have to put forward or the
amount of time it takes to complete the task.
L2 – So, ur greatest weakness?
ME – mam I think it is time management. I concentrate
much on fine details and always leave time.
L2 – Have u faced any problem because of that?
ME – yes mam, even while preparing for my exams if I
struck up in a topic I wouldn’t move to next topic.
L1 – Elavarasan, let us think that u have joined the
company and after joining the company you are asked to
go to California, where there is a threat that Bin
Laden is going to attack California. All the seniors
don’t want to go because of the threat so you are
chosen, because you are a fresher. So, what will u do
in such a situation?
ME – I’ll go to California.
L1 – what? Is that practical? Be pragmatic are u ready
to risk Ur life for a company?
ME – mam I am practical. If the death is going to come
for a man it will come to him, no matter where he is
even if he stays in India he will face death.
L2 – Then you are ready to go into a burning house?
ME – mam it’s a burning house, I know it is burning
so, I will not go in. But going to California is not
like that, there is a threat that’s all. It may happen
or it may not happen.
L1 – Will ur parents accept this and send u to
California?
ME – mam we all do believe in God. If he is my
protector then I believe that he will protect me at
California too.

(After a while)
L2 – Think of a scenario in which u are the only
person in ur college selected to do a project. That
requires a lot of preparation and work. If u do that u
will gain a lot of technical knowledge. At the same
time you are chosen by ur principal to do another
project which is not very important for u but very
important for ur principal. He wanted u to do it. Both
of the project requires heavy work and heavy
preparation, and u need to submit a report about Ur
projects daily. What will u do in this situation?
ME – mam, firstly I’ll talk to my principal and will
tell him about my situation.
L2 – If he is very adamant that u must do that
project?
ME –I’ll take both the project and try to do them,
that’s all I can do
L1 – How can it be possible to allocate time in such a
tight schedule between two different projects?
ME – I know it is very difficult but there is no other
go, so, I have to do that so...
L1 – Won’t u try any other method?
ME – no, mam first I’ll speak to him; if he compels me
I will do the work.
L1—try to solve this puzzle (she game me puzzle in a
small bit of paper)
The puzzle read like this " Starting with 1 half cup
of coffee and 1 half cup of tea, if u take 1 teaspoon
of tea and mix it to the coffee and then u take a
teaspoon of that mixture and mix it with the tea. At
last what will be more coffee or tea? ". It is very
easy puzzle; the answer is both the content remains
same. But I taught in a different way and answered
wrongly!!!
ME – mam coffee will be more.
L1 – (with a smile) Justify it.
ME – If u takes a teaspoon of tea and put it into
coffee… (I shouldn’t have used "put" here) tea gets
diluted. If u take a teaspoon of that mixture and add
it to tea, that would have had more coffee in that
than tea.
L1 – try this puzzle.
She gave me another simple puzzle "If the only
sister of your mother’s only brother has only one
child then what is the relationship between u and that
child?" Can you imagine a simplest puzzle than this?
But my mind worked in a different way and answered
completely wrong. The actual answer is "yourself",
but I in a hurry answered "my cousin"!!!
ME – mam , it is my cousin.
L1 and L2 – what? (At the same time)
L1 – may be u have to read it again Elavarasan.
ME – (After a while) I think it should be my cousin.
L1 – how?
ME – If my mother’s brother had a sister then, she
must be my mother’s sister too, hence her child must
be my cousin.
L2 – (with lowered voice as if I have done the
interview badly) Elavarasan, do u have any question?
ME – Hmmm no mam.
L1 – Ok , you may leave now.
ME – Thank u mam (and left the room, I was about to
close the door, some think blinked in my mind only
then I realized that the answer to the last puzzle was
just "me", I again felt "Oh my God another big
mistake")
After my interview was over I was asked to sit in a
place and my ID was taken to get signed from the HR
manager. He was no other than the person who was angry
at me when I went late. He went to my interview panel
and spoke for a while with the interviewers. This made
me sure that I would not be selected.
After a while he came with the very same angry face
and gave my ID to my coordinator. He called out my
name and asked me to return the ID to the security.

My Advice

So, friends, don’t ever be careless
like me and loose a valuable moment in your life. It
will be a very big lose.
